LEHIGH VALLEY INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT TERMINAL RENOVATION PROJECT

Lehigh Valley, PA  — The Lehigh Valley International Airport will have a new look to it in the near future.  Airport officials kicked off the Terminal Renovation Project with a wall breaking ceremony today.  Fully clad in their hard hats, safety glasses and sledge hammers in hand they took the first strike at knocking down a wall. Lehigh-Northampton Airport Authority Chairman Glenn Walbert commented; “This is a new beginning for the airport to get us to the next forty years.”

The first phase of the 45,705 square feet terminal renovation project includes
17, 000 square feet of the Main Terminal Building that is being completely renovated and a new structural addition of 6,500 square feet will provide more functional operating space. In addition, the entire terminal building will undergo a complete floor refurbishment through installation of a new, fresh epoxy terrazzo finish. The south second level exterior glass curtain wall will be replaced and enlarged to provide a more lighted and open interior space and improved energy efficiency.

Work included in this phase will be the demolition of existing and construction of new airline ticket counters and back offices, and construction of new concession space for news/gifts and restaurants.   Additional space for these functions will be provided by demolition of the Glass Terrace and by constructing over the existing unused outdoor patio area.

An interesting feature of the renovation plan is elimination of the public area baggage screening function. Baggage screening will be performed behind the ticketing area. This will allow for an open ticketing hall, with improved passenger circulation.

The appearance of the terminal interior will change significantly, resulting in a fresh, contemporary look replacing the outdated and somewhat worn existing finishes. New flat screen LCD displays will replace the existing flight information monitors. New ticket counters, fresh wall treatments and, with the replacement and addition of the terminal glass curtain wall, the entire facility will take on a more contemporary, clean appearance.

Most important, all electrical and mechanical systems will be replaced by the completion of the project.  A new terminal roof was installed in 2008.

Completion of the first phase will take approximately 16 months and cost about $7,000,000.
